Mboxes(tm) Help and Glossary

The following Terms are discussed below

Mailbox Name:

This is the leading part (the "yourname" part) of your Mboxes(tm) Email address (yourname@mboxes.com). For instance, if your name was Frank Marsh, you might choose "frankm" and your email address would then be "frankym@mboxes.com". You do not enter the "@mboxes.com" part of the address in this blank!

You might have chosen "Frank.Marsh" or "Marsh.Frank" or "fmarsh" or "Frankie" or "george" instead, for different possible Email addresses. Since capitalization is not significant in Email addresses, note that "FrankM" and "FRANKM" are equivalent to "frankm" and can usually be used interchangeably.

You may use the alphabetic characters (A-Z and a-z) in the name, or digits (0-9), or the punctuation characters "." and "-". Sorry, the Internet Email addresses do not support the special "European" characters. That is, "franky.m" and "franky1-m" would be legal names, but "franky*m" or "frank#$%" would not. Although you could create a name which is only numbers, such as "100399", we generally advise against it. It is preferable to use something that brings "you" to mind when a person reads it.

Since we are a world wide service, there will invariably be names which are already taken. If you choose a name which is already in our database, the program will tell you this, and suggest that you enter a different choice. Email addresses are case-insensitive (capitalization doesn't matter), so changing a Name by capitalizing some of its letters will not help matters. You will need to try different names until you get one that isn't already taken.

If necessary, use a period or a number. Avoid the hyphen if you can, it is a little harder to say to someone "frank hyphen m" (for frank-m) than simply "frank emm" (for frankm) or "frank dot m" (for frank.m). Also, consider names like frank14 or lori21.

Important: Make it something that you will remember later!

Email "Handle" for your Mail:

This is a longer "human understandable" nickname that might sometimes be attached to your Email address - your Email "Handle". Most Email client programs support such a name, and they usually generate return addresses something like "Frank Marsh" <frankm@mboxes.com> or frankm@mboxes.com (Frank Marsh) for the Email they send. It can be a nickname (like "the frankster") or your real name (like "Frank Marsh"). You need to supply at least 10 characters here. Some mailers use the information and some don't.

Your Subscription Password:

A 6 to 10 character "word" that you will use to access your Subscription functions. This "word" must be at least six characters, with no spaces. The characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and some limited punctuation characters are permitted. Upper and Lower case are significant: "Azsy007" is not the same as "azsy007". Please remember this password, as you will be unable to access your Subscription information or your "Lifetime URL(tm)" without it. Further, we recommend that it be a different password than the one you use for other Internet access. This will increase the security of your Subscription information and limit access to your "Lifetime URL(tm)" settings.

Your Mboxes(tm) Subscription and your actual Mailbox will both initially use the same password, but you may change the Mailbox Access Password with our "Configure your Mailbox" functions.

Your Mailbox Access Password:

This is the password that you will use with your Email client (like Eudora) to read Email from your Mailbox (via a POP server). Your Mailbox Access Password will initially be set, when your mailbox is created and activated, to match you Subscription Password. Later, you may change the Mailbox Access Password with our "Configure your Mailbox" functions.

This "word" must be at least six characters, with no spaces. The characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and some limited punctuation characters are permitted. Upper and Lower case are significant: "AzSy007" is not the same as "Azsy007". Please remember this password, as you will be unable to get mail form your Mailbox or Configure your Mailbox without it. Further, we recommend that it be a password different from the one you use for other Internet access. This will increase the security of your Mailbox and its control.

Other Email Address:

If you have another (more "transient" but current) Email address where we can reach you, you would enter that Email address here. We recommend that you keep this "other" Email address up-to-date. It is usually the one you get from your current provider. We may use it whenever we feel the need to try a "second" address to contact you about your account with us.

For example, if someone changes your Subscription information, we attempt to send Email to this address detailing the changes. Thus, you would know if someone was "fooling" with your Subscription data. Usually, we will try you at the Mboxes(tm) mailbox first, or also. For example, we might need to inform you that your mailbox is too "full", or remind you that it is about to expire.

Lifetime URL(tm):

We allow you to use an Mboxes(tm) "auto-link" URL (for example, http://www.mboxes.com/al/yourmailboxname.htm) as your "Lifetime URL(tm)" (for as long as you have your Mboxes(tm) Mailbox). You may tell others to use this URL to access your site, no matter where on the Internet your site might be. When they use the URL, we attempt to automatically link ("auto-link") them to your "current" URL (Web site address). If you move your site, you just update your "Current URL" with us. Soon thereafter, your "Lifetime URL(tm)" at Mboxes(tm) should get updated to send them on to your new site's location.

Current URL:

If you want to use our "Lifetime URL(tm)" feature, just fill in the current full Internet address (URL) of your web site. For example, the URL for Mboxes.com is http://www.mboxes.com/ and yours might be http://www.provider.com/~somename/ or something similar.
